Rocket Launcher Craft for Teaching Self-Regulation
Why is it important to take deep breaths?
Learning how to take deep breaths is one of the easiest ways to teach kids how to self-calm when they’re upset. When you take a deep breath in, your bring fresh oxygen to your brain and body, which slows down respiration and helps to calm the nervous system. So if your child is getting ready to explode (or perhaps has already) taking deep breaths is a SENSational way to calm down.
How to take a deep breath
For this activity, inhale for a count of three. Breathe in. 3…2…1… Hold. Blow out to blast off.
When to practice taking deep breaths
The key is to practice deep breathing is during a time when your child is not upset. By pairing a lesson in deep breathing exercises with this fun rocket launching activity, your child is more likely to be accepting of this technique in the future when deep breaths are really needed.
Launch your rockets while standing still and avoid running around with straws for safety.
